Valerie Hopkins
Chair of Trustees

CHAIR OF TRUSTEES from November 2017. Valerie has had a varied and rich career which she believes could make a real contribution. Qualifying as a chartered accountant with a forerunner of Ernst and Young, Valerie moved onto the stock market as an investment analyst. Valerie says: When family came along she changed directions and spent some 9 years with the old ILEA, lecturing in accounting, audit and investment at a college which is now part of South Bank University and latterly taking up the pastoral role of Group Tutor. Valerie joined Penna, the outplacement consultancy as a career counsellor, whilst at the same time studying for a post grad diploma in counselling at Roehampton. The training on the course underpinned the importance of communication skills in any role and so Valerie took on the challenge of setting up her own consultancy, Humanitas, to provide support and training to City firms and Valerie is still coaching and mentoring senior executives. Valerie also continued with counselling roles on a voluntary basis and has worked in a number of charities with a richly diverse group of clients, including trafficked girls from Bosnia, enforced marriage victims from India, young drug addicts and many more. Further studying followed Valerie’s first general counselling qualification, and she has since completed courses in group work, brief therapy, systemic family therapy and finally a post grad diploma from Birmingham University in solution focused therapy which to this day, underpins the majority of Valerie’s one to one work.”
